A San Francisco icon, William Stout began his small specialty bookstore out of his living room over 40 years ago. I had the privledge to work with William on numerous projects, through both his bookstore and his independent publishing house.
Stationary & Mailing Labels
When the publishing house re-located to Richmond, CA, the stationery had to be re-designed. William wanted a strong modern aesthetic that would be visible from across the room.
Book Signing Posters
There were often booksigning and reading events for both the publishing company and the bookstore that needed marketing posters. It was a great experience to try to capture the mood of the event and still reflect the aesthetic of the company.
Catalog Design & Layout
Stout Publishers was constantly issuing new titles, thus needing updated mail order catalogs for booksellers. During this time period, I was able to help the publishing house transition from a paper catalog to a website with an online order form.
Retail Design
With real estate at a premium the bookstore was always looking for ways to increase display areas for merchandise. William asked if I could come up with a solution to the narrow passage wall as a place to showcase titles.
Since the pony wall was not able to support an attached shelving unit that could bear any weight, I came up with the solution of utilizing hooks that went over the wall. This created 4 flat face display shelves on a stable unit that still allowed for clear & safe passage.
